PRICE
We would be happy to do a personalized comparison of your feeding regimen to one of our programs. In order to do this, we need a sample of one ration of your horses’ diet and some information regarding your horses’ exercise regimen.

Getting Started with HorseSense™ is as Easy as 1, 2, 3

HorseSense™ is a Balanced Optimal Nutrient “Delivery System” commonly called a Ration Balancer.

It is grounded in the logic that each pound of ideal weight of your horse requires a certain amount of minerals, vitamins and amino acids (a.k.a. Nutrients) to achieve optimal health and function, not more, not less. There are three main factors that need to be addresses in order to determine the correct amount of HorseSense for any individual horse.

1)      Forage and Hay type

We all know that the nutrient content of Alfalfa is very different from that of Timothy, and a Blend or Mix of hays wil create a third scenario.  Here are the different scenarios.

-          Grass and legume hay mixed diet such as Timothy or Alfalfa
-          Legume hay based diet such as Alfalfa or Lespedeza
-          Grass hay based diet such as Timothy or Orchard

Now find your Pasture/Hay type on your feed tag.

2)      Exercise Regimen

How hard a horse works determined how fast he/she will metabolize those nutrients.  You want to replace them at the same rate that you are using them so that you don’t “Bounce checks” on your horse’s nutrition account.

-          Maintenance – Hanging out or just having fun
-          Light Performance – Fit and in regular work
-          Moderate Performance – Racing, Heavy Foxhunting or Combined Training
-          Intense Performance – 50 or 100 Mile Endurance Racing, Polo
-          Breeding Stallion or Gestating Mare

Now find the correct activity level on your feed tag.

 3)      Weight Determination

We must first, correctly determine your horse’s weight. Please follow the instructions on an equine weight tape to get this number. For best results, we suggest using the nearest weigh station or truck stop for best accuracy. The next best weight determination would be to use a weight tape. Please consult your veterinarian if you have difficulty determining your horse’s weight.  If he or she is underweight or overweight, we want our target-weight to determine the amount of nutrients we place in the diet.

Now calculate your horse's weight.

Horse’s Actual Weight ____________ lbs

Horse’s Ideal Weight ___________ lbs

Difference ____________ lbs(Under or Over?)

Here’s how to figure out the correct weight of HorseSense to feed to any horse:
(The system is based in the optimal nutrient requirement of a standard 1100 # research horse.)

1)      Convert the Pounds and Ounces listed for the 1100# horse in your category, to all ounces (1 Pound = 16 Ounces).
2)      With your calculator, divide the ounces by 1100, and multiply by your horse’s ideal weight. This gives you the daily requirement for your horse. Divide in into as many feedings as you give in a day.
3)      Weigh out the appropriate amount of feed. You will need a food scale for your feed room. They are available in the kitchen aisle of your local big box store.

Please note:
-          The tag lists a suggested amount of Oats and Pasture or Hay. These listings are hypothetical. We acknowledge a need for calories and fiber, but the amount for any particular horse is determined by its keeping ability, and that is for you to decide, based on weight and energy level.
-          DO NOT feed with Commercial Sweet Feeds. Most contain vitamin/mineral premixes which would unbalance HorseSense. DO PROVIDE plain white salt and fresh water.
-          Feed NO nutrient-based supplements with HorseSense except Chromium (Mir-a-Chrome is safe and easy). You don’t want to unbalance these carefully configured nutrients.  This System was designed to relieve you of all worry about whether your horse is getting everything he or she needs. It’s all there!
